A Message from...

Amy Wescom, Director of Jazz

Like my gramps always said – if you are going to do something, anything, do it with GUSTO – no regrets, go big, reach as high as you can.

And that’s exactly what I intend to bring to Class Act Dance as the Director of the Jazz program.

Dance is spirit, dance is emotion, dance is communication and dance is creativity. I’ve spent the majority of my life living dance as a performer, instructor and choreographer. I have been fortunate to work with some of the best – at UCI where I graduated with a degree in Dance, at Allan Hancock College where my work was presented as part of Dimensions in Dance, and with local legends Pat Jackson and Leslie Baumberger. I’ve had leadership positions throughout my career, most recently with SLO City Jazz, part of American Dance of SLO. My own child is now entering dance, so I can truly say, I’ve seen dance – and the challenges - from all sides.

Pardon the cliché, but as I look back now, I believe I’ve been training for this role at Class Act for most of my adult life. I am genuinely thrilled to be here working with some of the top performing and teaching talent in the county. I’m committed to demonstrate my love of dance by showing respect and compassion for my dancers and colleagues. My ability to nurture my students comes from my upbringing in a very close family. I thank my mother and grandparents for instilling my sense of value, responsibility and integrity.

I believe it is our responsibility as adults to help our children break down social barriers, learn honor and respect, treat others appropriately, improve self-confidence and learn to communicate and cooperate with others. The Jazz program is fundamentally based on these ideals and is designed to provide a path for my students to achieve their own goals and dreams.

Dance is life, and why not live it to the fullest – with gusto! I can’t wait to get started!
